July 21: Ernest Hemingway’s Birthday

Ernest Hemingway, American novelist and writer of short stories, was born on this day in 1899. He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for his novel, The Old Man and the Sea, and he later won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. Hemingway passed away in 1961, but you can still read about his life in his entry in Encyclopædia Britannica or in the Today in History feature from the Library of Congress. The National Portrait Gallery also includes many wonderful images telling his life story.

Find his books in your library through WorldCat and read plot summaries and criticism in Literary Reference Center.
