GALILEO Tutorials and Recording Audio Tips

The GALILEO staff has been producing Video Tutorials on using the GALILEO interface and its resources. In producing these videos, they have found that the following tips have been helpful in recording audio for these videos:

Environment

  • Listen to the room before you start recording.
  • How loud is the air conditioning or any other sounds in or out of the room? Compare the audio level of the narrator versus the recording environment.
  • Try to find a room with minimal environment noise.
  • If ideal conditions are not available, make sure the narrator being recorded speaks loud enough so you do not have to increase the recording level, which will pick up more of the unwanted environment noise.
  • Always record a quick test to judge these variables before you proceed.

Microphone Technique

  • Where is the microphone positioned in reference to the narrator? The narrator should be about 4 inches from the microphone.
  • Avoid plosives by changing the angle of the narrator in reference to the microphone or use a Pop Filter.
  • Is the microphone on a table that is amplifying the hum of the computer? A piece of foam or something absorbent can be placed under the microphone to absorb some of the vibrations.
