GALILEO Turns 27

GALILEO turns 27 today!

(Check out this crossword puzzle to celebrate our 27 years. See below for more details.)

In 1995, the World Wide Web was only 5 years old, and GALILEO was a nascent idea to bring a universe of resources to libraries across the state.

For many, GALILEO provided not only an introduction to the internet, but also immediate access to hundreds of titles for educational institutions across the state.

Then, only 18 million homes were estimated to be online by the Pew Research Center. Today, there are more than 45 million searches yearly on GALILEO Search alone.

In the 27 years, GALILEO also has morphed several times, updating with new technologies, resources and design.

Initially, GALILEO included 1,500 full-text journals. Today, users can find hundreds of thousands of resources using GALILEO and its network of educational partners.

And last year, GALILEO included a bento box design to make finding these resources easier and quicker.

The GALILEO department also expanded to include three additional programs beyond the initial virtual library: Digital Library of Georgia, GALILEO Interconnected Libraries and Affordable Learning Georgia.

We’re looking forward to many more years of GALILEO. Happy birthday to us!
