Creating Your Story @ GALILEO: Where You’re From

In keeping with the National Library Week 2011 theme of Create your own story @ your library, we will be sharing a series of posts this week on Creating Your Story @ GALILEO with resources to help you tell the story of where you’re from, where your people are from, and where you’re going.

To learn more about where you’re from, let’s start with Georgia history resources in GALILEO.

For all things Georgia, the New Georgia Encyclopedia is an authoritative source of information on people, places, events, history, and other topics about this state. It includes articles, images, audio/video clips, and links to related websites. Browse for your city or county to learn more about your area.

The Digital Library of Georgia is a gateway to Georgia’s history and culture found in digitized books, manuscripts, photographs, government documents, newspapers, maps, audio, video, and other resources. Choose to Browse by County to see collections related to your area.

GeorgiaInfo offers current and historical information on the state of Georgia. Check out the Counties and Cities sections to find all types of online resources for your area.

Find these and more in the Georgia History and Culture page in GALILEO.

Once you’ve learned about your area, you can write a poem (for National Poetry Month!) about your hometown and create a digital story to share your personal narratives in the Where I’m From in GALILEO activity. This is designed as a lesson plan for students, but researchers of all ages (yes, even the grown-ups!) can use this to tell their story. See the Where I’m From in GALILEO page for instructions, guides to resources and tools, and an example video and poster. Watch the archived webinar for more information.

For a closer look at Georgia history resources, you can view the archive of Digital Library of Georgia: Uncovering Georgia’s History and Culture (with related handout and poster), or you can view the archive of Historic Newspapers in the Digital Library of Georgia.

There’s more to come this week. On Wednesday, we’ll look at resources to learn where your people are from, and on Friday, we will learn about resources to help you decide where you’re going.
