Affordable Learning Georgia Grant Recipient Wins OE Award for Excellence

Open Technical Communication, a freely available, open-sourced technical communication textbook developed with Affordable Learning Georgia grants, is a winner in the 2022 OE Awards for Excellence.

It was awarded in the Open Reuse/Remix/Adaptation category.Check out the award page here.

The open textbook has been known under its original title, Sexy Technical Communication, as well as its current title: Open Technical Communication (Open TC).

A team from Kennesaw State University remixed the original version by David McMurrey. The KSU team included Tamara Powell, Tiffani Tijerina, Jonathan Arnett, Monique Logan and Cassandra Race.

“I’m honored to have played a part in all of Open TC’s iterations,” Tijerina said. “Working together with Tammy and Jonathan over the years to make this open textbook a resource for all who seek to improve their technical communication skills has been a pleasure, and I look forward to many more years of continuous improvement.”

The project won a total of three Affordable Learning Georgia grants over the years, including the first in 2015 during round 3. Tijerina submitted the project for subsequent successful grant rounds, and then later joined ALG as program manager.

“We’re honored to support amazing University System of Georgia like this award-winning Open Technical Communication team of faculty, instructional designers, students, and accessibility experts at KSU through our Affordable Materials Grants,” said ALG director Jeff Gallant.

“Open Technical Communication is a shining example of what happens when you give creative experts in USG institutions the agency to do something special, impactful, and affordable for their students, and we are thrilled that this team is being recognized for their outstanding work.”

The OE Awards website noted:

“What began as a rather amateur design and title from a group of first-time OER-developers has evolved over the years into a professionally designed, accessible, and interactive open textbook that has been adopted by faculty all over the United States and in several other countries. This is an up-and-coming, tactically developed open textbook that is taking the field of technical and professional communication by storm.”
