Next Generation Libraries Focus of GUGM 2010

The annual GIL User Group Meeting (GUGM), held online on May 20, included presentations on cataloging, circulation trends, new discovery tools, and optimizing GALILEO on library websites, all topics that supported the theme “The Show Must Go On: Strategic Transitions for the Next Generation Library.” Speaking of libraries in his keynote address, Curt Carver, University System of Georgia CIO and Vice Chancellor for the Office of Information and Instructional Technology, said, “It’s a role Google will never fill. It’s not about doing searches. It’s about that personal connection and understanding the constituents better than anyone else, and that’s what these local libraries provide.” Carver also spoke on support for USG and public libraries as outlined in the OIIT Strategic Plan. The 380 participants at GUGM 2010 represented USG libraries, as well as some private academic and public libraries.
