Governor Brian Kemp Honors GALILEO’s 30th Anniversary with Commendation

Gov. Brian Kemp marked GALILEO’s 30th anniversary in a special state commendation. Read the commendation below.

“Whereas: GALILEO, Georgia’s Virtual Library, was supported and approved 30 years ago by then-Governor Zell Miller and the General Assembly, officially launching at University System of Georgia institutions on September 21, 1995; and

“Whereas: GALILEO has grown beyond USG institutions, now providing services to every public library, every public school student, and many private K-12 schools and colleges across the state, creating fiscal savings through central licensing; and

“Whereas: GALILEO provides free and equitable access to high-quality educational databases, electronic books, news media, and scholarly research so that every Georgia resident may pursue lifelong learning, to the tune of 50 million searches a year; and

“Whereas: GALILEO’s programs now extend to the Digital Library of Georgia that has reached a milestone of 4 million digitized pages, and Affordable Learning Georgia that has saved Georgia college students nearly $200 million in textbook costs; and

“Whereas: The State of Georgia is proud to recognize GALILEO’s 30th anniversary and its vision to support all Georgians as they move from childhood to adulthood and from inquiry to application, resulting in a more informed and well-educated Georgia well into the future; now

Therefore: I, Brian Kemp, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby commend the 30th Anniversary of GALILEO.”
