Affordable Learning Georgia, GALILEO Award $337,000 in Grants to Improve Access to No- and Low-Cost Learning Materials

Affordable Learning Georgia (ALG) recently awarded $337,000 to University System of Georgia faculty to expand access to open educational resources.

ALG is an initiative to promote student success with affordable alternatives to expensive commercial textbooks. It is run by GALILEO, which stands for “GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online,” an initiative of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. GALILEO is an online library portal to authoritative, subscription-only information that is not available through free search engines or web directories.

This is the 15th round of awards for ALG’s Textbook Transformation Grants. Fifteen USG institutions submitted 43 proposals. Of these, 29 proposals from 11 USG institutions were awarded grants from $2,800 to$30,000 a piece. Courses that will be impacted by these grants include biology, political science, technology, and more.

“The work of these innovative USG instructors and experts will reduce textbook costs to students throughout the USG, leading to more students having the required materials for a course on day one, therefore increasing equity in the classroom and hopefully contributing to more USG students’ retention, progression, and graduation,” said Jeff Gallant, ALG’s program director.

Since its inception, the grant program has awarded more than $5.2 million in funds to support adoption, adaption and creation of no- or low-cost learning materials in USG courses. To apply for the next round of grants, visit ALG’s website. The deadline to apply is Jan. 13.
