1940 Census Now Available from National Archives

Today, the National Archives released the 1940 census records. You can access browsable records at the National Archives site and read more in the National Archives press release.

The records were also released to vendors today, so ProQuest is now feverishly working to get these records added to Ancestry Library Edition and HeritageQuest Online.

Our contact at ProQuest tells us that this will be a huge project. There will be over 18 terabytes of images to load and over 132 million names to index. The vendor is anticipating that this will take at least 6-12 months to complete. Browseable images will likely appear first in the products, and searchable name indexes will then be added for each state.

So, stay tuned. GALILEO staff will announce when these records have been added to ProQuest resources available in GALILEO.
