How can I add an Ask a Librarian chat widget to GALILEO using GALILEO Admin?
Using GALILEO Admin, a library chat service widget can be added to GALILEO. The widget displays on the right side of the main navigation banner in GALILEO besides the “Support” button. When you select “Ask a Librarian” the chat service will display in a new window.
Please note: your library must have an existing chat service subscription.
Currently, only the SpringShare LibChat service is available to add, but more services will be added soon.
If you have a GALILEO Admin account, you can setup the chat service widget by following these steps:
- Log into GALILEO Admin (https://admin.galileo.usg.edu/)
- Navigate to the “Institutions” section of GALILEO Admin.
- Select your institution code to the left of your institution name.
- This will take you to your institution record. Now, select the “Widgets” button
- Select “New Widget” button
A new widget form will display. Enter the following information:
- Service Select chat service (only LibChat is currently available at this time)
- Direct Link URL Your Chat Service URL (In LibAnswers visit LibChat > Chat Management > Chat Widgets. Create a new widget if necessary. (Choose Widget Type = ‘button pop-out’ for full compatibility.) Then paste the URL from View Widget Code > Direct Link.)
- Active? toggle on/off display of chat widget
- Display Name Customize Chat Widget text (default is Ask a Librarian)

Please note that when your chat service is unavailable, this will be reflected in the widget.
