Updates to Offline Access for EBSCO eBooks: Readium LCP DRM and Thorium Reader

Answer

Effective May 19, 2026, EBSCO will transition to a new DRM solution called Readium LCP DRM for offline eBook downloads/reading. This system replaces Adobe Digital Editions. EBSCO recommends using the Thorium Reader Application for offline reading on a computer.

Note: This change specifically affects users downloading EBSCO eBooks to computers for offline use.

Online eBook Access Remains Unchanged
There are no changes to how one views EBSCO eBooks online. GALILEO users can continue to read eBooks directly through their browsers on Mac, PC, Chromebook, or mobile devices via GALILEO Search.

Mobile and ChromeOS Support
At launch on May 19, 2026, Thorium Reader will not be available for mobile devices. Future support is planned as follows:

  • iOS: Development is underway for a 2026 release.
  • Android: Planned for a later date.
  • ChromeOS: Currently unavailable with no confirmed timeline.
