GALILEO Updates: Full-Text Filter, EBSCO Ebooks and K-12 Links

As we start the new year, GALILEO Support Services wants to remind users of several important updates and changes.

Full-Text Filter Due to popular demand from K-12 media specialists, teachers, and students, we have updated the EBSCO Discovery Service (GALILEO main search/Classic Search) and Explora databases to automatically limit searches to initially display only full text results.

This change will result in more useful results for K-12 researchers. If a user wishes to conduct a more comprehensive search that includes all records, including items not available in full text, it is simple to remove the filter by toggling the full text filter off in “all filters.”

EBSCO eBook Updates EBSCO is expected to launch a new Digital Rights Management (DRM) solution for its ebooks on May 19. EBSCO states the change will enhance the overall user experience and ensure better content protection. Users will need a specialized reader application to read EBSCO eBooks with DRM, and they recommend Thorium Reader. GALILEO is working with EBSCO to host an a training session on the changes after implementation.

Update Your Old Links (K-12 Only) GALILEO made technical changes last year that will cause links to individual items captured from GALILEO prior to July 1, 2025 to fail after May 29, 2026. Please update any links to unique items, such as eBooks, and articles, by then. You do not need to update links to databases (GALILEO express links), only item level links. There is a guide to updating links here.

Coming Soon: Improved Navigation We are planning to make navigation improvements to the GALILEO search homepage. The changes will provide a more efficient way of accessing information about your GALILEO institution, GALILEO tools, and GALILEO news. These items will be moved from the bottom of the page to the top of the page, adding them to more efficient dropdown menus easily visible when you visit GALILEO. Expect the change to take place in late January.
